Thank you for posting this. I have been a "self manipulator" since my teenage years (I'm 28 now) and my back problems have only gotten worse. Unlike the person you describe at the beginning of your post, I would be the guy that comes up to you and asks for an adjustment! When my pain got real bad I would see a chiropractor and then go back to self manipulating until I can't stand it anymore.

Your post makes perfect sense to me and it seems I have had it backwards all these years. I had my first adjustment when I was around 12 and I thought, the chiropractor made my back feel better by popping it, so I'll do the same thing. I've been thinking all this time, if my back hurts this much with so much popping every day, I can't imagine what it would be like if I didn't pop it!

I'm calling the chiropractor tomorrow and I'm fighting the urge that I have to pop my back. I am going to checkout your podcast also!

Thanks again for sharing and I apologize for the long comment.

Wow. As much as belts have advantages, they really have disadvantages so that they must be used for a certain period of time and must be, as much as possible ordered by a physician. Though it is very helpful especially for those having problems with the lumbar spine. This information is indeed helpful and educative.

Please consider visiting our site, http://www.backaline.com/, we have some products that can be most helpful for jobs that require lifting and straining that can trigger pain. Thanks!

Hi Dr. Ruben -
Thanks for adding to the conversation her on SpinalColumnBlog. I have a podcast that you might be interested in over at <a href="http://spinalcolumnradio.com" rel="nofollow">SpinalColumnRadio.com</a>. Of interest is an interview I did with Dr. Gary Street who is a chiropractic historian. On on this podcast we touched upon his involvement in the military during Vietnam as a chiropractor. He was actually brought in as a chiropractor under contract... and that, apparently, lasted for two weeks. And then they didn't know what to do with him... so they put him in a "Bone Specializing Center" to triage wounded patients. <a href="http://spinalcolumnradio.com/2011/02/18/episode-044-chiropractic-historian-dr-gary-street/" rel="nofollow">Click here</a> for the link.

Hello Dr Lamar- I'm currently a DC in Puerto Rico & things weren't going economically well for DC's in PR. So I've tried several times to talk to navy, air-force and army recruiters & all of them couldn't find a position closely related to our biological studies..it was just very frustrating to see that they would take people w/ a bachelor, Master's instead of a DC's title. Know of DC's that has gone into the Navy as aerospace physiologist, and they like it...The navy only takes 1 DC per year and must have 3.0 gpa and up...besides that good luck for everyone, they would rather have veterinarian assistant than DC(nothing against animals)..that was one comment I made to an army website(med cell army); they use to have chiropractor listed but they took it out....keep posting Doc!!!!
I recently was in the middle of town and instantly had an uncontrollable bout of hiccups, there was no water around, i tried squeezing my eyeballs etc, but it could not work.
An idea was then brought to my attention that, since hiccups are somehow caused by the lack of enough oxygen in the system, i could try to take in very deep breaths while swallowing some saliva at the intervals. I tried it out. It worked perfectly, and since then it has been my best remedy, since i have the hiccups almost on a daily basis.
I am not very sure of the actual explanation behind it but it works wonderfully and instantly.

Hello MB -

Thanks for taking the time to comment. My thoughts on commissioning?.... Your guess is as good as mine. I see it happening <em>later</em> not sooner — if and when it does happen. Unfortunately things like this move very slowly when it comes to the military and government. I have yet to read anything lately that speaks about commissioning. I'll be sure to post updates if I do.

What's the timeline on commissioning? (i know its not a sure thing) I spoke with Dr. Becky Halstead at my school about a year ago and i was able to ask her if she had a thought on this. She said somewhere between 10-15 years for the Army to commission DC's. I was able to talk to Dr. Patrick Delamere (spelling?) former CO of the 244th medical unit for the NY Guard and he said that the navy and airforce will commission before the army would. Thoughts?

Dr. Lamar

Your grasp of the plight of chiropractors in the military is spot on! I am a retired Army pilot and have tried for years to share my skills with either the DoD or the VA. So far I have never even been called back or interviewed. My assumption is that they prefer DC's with an alphabet behind their names, while the soldiers would definately prefer someone who has "been there and done that". As a veteran of Operation Desert Storm and several other theraers of operation; let me assure all of those out there how vital musculoskeletal and biomechanical care is to the line soldiers. Please continue to let your voice be heard!

As a veteran of Operation Desert Storm and several other theraers of operation; let me assure all of those out there how vital musculoskeletal and biomechanical care is to the line soldiers. Please continue to let your voice be heard!

Natasha-

Thanks for reading my SpinalColumnBlog. I am so frustrated for you. Your story is all too common and it saddens me. <strong> To date, Tricare does not accept Chiropractic. Period.</strong> We have several retired military that we see that have Medicare (which, ironically <em>does</em> cover Chiropractic). Once we bill Medicare, a secondary bill AUTOMATICALLY gets sent to Tricare for consideration of what Medicare did not cover..... And <em>everytime</em>, we get a statement back from Tricare stating that <em>"Chiropractors are not a TRICARE payable provider. Therefore, services provided by a chiropractor are denied."</em> Natasha we have a HUGE file of these! Don't you thinK that Medicare -- which is a federal program -- would know that their cousin, Tricare, does NOT cover Chiropractic. Why do we tax payers need to waste all this administrative money!!! (excuse my rant).

So what to do? I don't know your entire situation. Every automobile case is different and I'm sure the laws that I am aware of here in WA state are very different from your Washington in DC. You may want to consult with an Attorney. At the very least, you may find a compassionate Chiropractor that will help you get the care you need at a fee that you can afford.

Your comment has inspired me to be a little more diligent to add to this article as I see Military Updates on Chiropractic come through. (See the video above from FOX 2 News of former Brigadier General Becky Halstead speaking about the need and advantages of chiropractic care to the US military). To get the Military to recognize Chiropractic the way we as a profession would like to see it (Chiropractic as Commissioned Officers and readily available to Active Duty, Reserves, Dependents, and Retirees) will require an ACT Of CONGRESS and a CROWBAR. You can help become part of the <em>solution</em> by visiting http://ChiroVoice.org and joining. It's Free. Plus you'll be kept in the loop as to what action is happening with regards to Chiropractic and the Military.

Oh... Wow! :D Thank you for that article! I go to a chiropractor every day (who thankfully does law enforcement at cost to insurance) and since it's finals prep week for me, I haven't been this week. I came looking for a stretch or something I could do to relieve the tension in my lower back (twisted pelvis, taking my spine with it... pain ensues lol) or even achieve that ungodly glorious pop he manages to get out of my pelvis when I see him but... I'm really glad I read this instead. I pop absolutely everywhere, from neck to knees and occasionally my ankles by just moving sometimes. My neck, I generally pop, as you said, under stress and always feels so good. I'll admit, it's much better when he does it. After I read your article, I reflected a bit and I realized that since I've been seeing him, my thoracic spine no longer pops on command! I used to be able to flex my shoulder blades back (by pushing my chest forward) and pop it, but... not anymore. This is awesome. I'm so excited to know that he DID fix something. I knew he was awesome, but I didn't know how awesome.

Thanks again! (sorry for such a long comment!)

While your comment that chiropractic "solves all problems with the nervous system" might be a bit of a stretch, chiropractic certainly is extremely effective in allowing the body to express its true health potential.... and I'd say that is why we are still here to this day. Chiropractic works... and our patients know it. Thanks for reading. :-)

Thanks Jane for the compliment and unsolicited commercial. ;-)

Logan and I are having a great time producing http://SpinalColumnRadio.com. To say that this experience is a memory maker for the two of us would be an understatement.

....And since you gave me a commercial, I'd be happy to give you one: Folks, Jane Shasky is one talented artist. Her paintings are awesome. She has my "Farm Chick" wife pegged! Chances are you've seen her work already, and didn't even know it. You won't regret visiting http://JaneShasky.com.

Way to go, Tom! I had so much fun listening to your first podcast...even laughed out loud as I was sitting here working. You sound like a professional broadcaster and make your info as entertaining as it is informative. Can't wait for the next episode. For any one looking for a chiropractor, I can't recommend Dr. Lamar enough...he's helped me so much over the years and his knowledge and compassion are beyond measure.
