The New Wonder Drug
[originally published in KCN, January 2001]
Ever wonder what’s in my medicine cabinet? One LARGE bottle.
It’s something I know that the pharmaceutical companies would love to capture and call their own. Let me share the label with you….
BRAND NAME: Chiropractic Adjustments
GENERIC NAME: Chiropractic Manipulative Therapy. CPT code book designation 98940, 98941, 98942, or 98943.
DESCRIPTION: Any chiropractic therapeutic procedure that utilizes controlled force, leverage, direction, amplitude, and velocity which is directed at specific joints or anatomical regions. Commonly used to influence joint and neurophysiological function.
WARNING: To be administered only by a licensed chiropractor. Self administration or administration by someone other than a chiropractor can be extremely dangerous.
INDICATIONS: Vertebral and/or Extremity Subluxation Complexes. Signs and symptoms commonly associated with these diagnoses are too numerous to list in their entirety but do include low back pain, shoulder blade pain, neck pain, headaches, muscle spasms, numbness, tingling, sprains and strains, tendonitis, bursitis, shoulder pain, arm pain, leg pain, elbow pain, carpal tunnel/wrist pain, hip pain, knee pain, ankle/foot pain, rib pain, jaw pain, and sometimes visceral problems. Consult your administering chiropractor for more information.
Also works well prophylactically to aid in maintaining states of wellness and is often recommended as a “first line of defense” for many conditions before looking to more invasive and risky methods of treatment.
SIDE EFFECTS: Relief of pain, increased energy, and improved function are commonly felt.
ADVERSE REACTIONS: Remarkably safe. Most adjustments are comfortable, however mild, temporary soreness has been reported in approximately 30% of cases following the first couple of treatments. For more information, speak with your administering chiropractor.
ACTIVE INGREDIENT: 100% Skillfully, calculated, controlled thrust with a precise direction. The many variables that may be modified to fit the patient’s circumstances/ condition and chiropractor’s treatment goals are: Anatomy — articular or non-articular; Contact — specific or nonspecific; Force — manual, manual mechanically assisted, or mechanical manually assisted; Leverage — long or short; and Velocity and Amplitude — high velocity / low amplitude, high velocity / high amplitude, low velocity / high amplitude, or low velocity / low amplitude.
INACTIVE INGREDIENTS: Pre and post manipulation assessment which includes documentation review, chart review, imaging review, test interpretation, care planning, patient assessment (eg. palpation), patient preparation (eg. positioning and set up of equipment), post-adjustment assessment, readjustment if necessary, post-adjustment instruction to the patient, chart documentation, arrangements for other services, consultation and communications, and reporting and review of any appropriate literature.
DOSAGE: For optimal results, take regularly. Frequency and duration of specific treatment plans depends on patient’s condition, age, and severity of problem. Consult your chiropractor for a dosage plan that is right for you.
PRECAUTION: If after an adequate regimen of Chiropractic Adjustments your chiropractor determines that your condition is not responding to or progressing as he or she would expect, given your circumstances, referral to another health care practitioner for assistance or complete transfer of care will be made.
Okay, so it’s not the only bottle in my medicine cabinet, but it is the one I most often reach for first. Its 100% natural and non-toxic. It contains no additives or fillers. It doesn’t require you to put anything into your body, nor does it require that you take anything out. It recognizes and respects that health and healing come from the inside out, not the outside in.
Chiropractic — it may not be as attractive as a bright, shiny pill, but 106 years of results speak for themselves. Take 40 and call me in a year.
