Recently a film producer compared the chiropractic profession to a “beaten wife.” To paraphrase, he said, “During the course of the making of my film, I was astounded by how large groups of chiropractors contacted me saying, ‘Please don’t make them mad, Jeff.’”
The film producer I’m talking about is Jeff Hays. His movie is entitled “Doctored.” And the “them” he was referring to is Political Medicine.
“It’s time for chiropractors to stand up and make their own voices heard,” he said in response to a question regarding why the successes of chiropractic have been suppressed and not gotten out to the public. (more…)

September 18th will mark the 111th anniversary of the first chiropractic adjustment delivered by our founding chiropractor, D.D.Palmer. So, the question for all of you trivia buffs is, “What was the first chiropractic patient adjusted for?” If you answered “lower back pain,” you’re wrong. You’re also wrong if you answered “headache,” “neck pain,” “shoulder blade pain,” or “sciatica.” The correct answer, just might surprise you, for the first chiropractic patient presented with a condition that chiropractors tend not to be associated with these days: hearing loss.

When I started Spinal Column Radio two years ago, my original intention was merely to refresh and repurpose the decade and half of articles I had written for the Kingston Community News into a radio-style format. I never dreamt that our show would take such a radical and exciting turn, sending my audio-engineer-son and I coast to coast interviewing some of the most influential and greatest philosophical minds in our profession. I was being described as the “Larry King” of chiropractic.

My eleven year-old audio-engineer son, Logan, and I just returned home from an amazing weekend in New Jersey after taking our Spinal Column Radio podcast studio on the road (October, 2011). Marking our third time now to the long-standing New Beginnings Chiropractic Philosophy Weekends, we were invited to interview over twenty-one fantastic chiropractors, cover a 60 minute speed coaching event, and conduct a battery of “man on the street” interviews. By all measures it was a successful weekend! And then it was time for us to come home. And to do so we had a battle on our hands.

I love podcasting. I love it for many different reasons. But it’s the “Power of the Podcast” that keeps me coming back.
It’s been nearly two years now since my eleven year-old son, Logan, and I launched our Spinal Column Radio podcast over the “Internet airwaves.” A podcast is essentially a radio show that you can listen to on the Internet at your convenience — no need to tune in at a particular time. Ours, as you may have guessed, is about chiropractic. Our father-son team works because Logan wants to be a chiropractor like Dad and has a knack for technology. That’s why he’s my audio-engineer. As for myself, I love talking about chiropractic — especially behind a microphone.

Mark your calendars! Because on September 18th, chiropractic turns 108 [115 by today’s date in 2010]. It was on this day back in 1895, from his office on the second floor of the Ryan Block building in Davenport, Iowa, that D.D. Palmer delivered his first adjustment — an adjustment that not only changed the life of his patient, but the lives of millions that would follow the birth of this new profession of chiropractic.
So, just what did the first chiropractic patient complain of? Well, it may surprise you, but it wasn’t back pain, neck pain, or even headaches. (more…)

Diversified, Gonstead, Cox Flexion Distraction, Activator, Thompson, Sacro Occipital Technique, NIMMO Receptor Tonus, Applied Kinesiology, Logan Basic, Cranial, Pierce-Stillwagon, Pettibon, Directional Non-Force, Toftness, Chiropractic Spinal Biophysics, Toggle Recoil, Neuro Emotional Technique — the list goes on, and on, and on, easily surpassing the 100 mark. To the average chiropractic patient, or non-patient for that matter, these names probably seem like some sort of cryptic chiropractic jargon. But to the chiropractor, these names parallel a walk down the tool aisle at Sears — these names represent chiropractic adjustive techniques.
