Imagine a bank robber wearing the stereotypical burglar garb. The safe stands open with bags of money piled high as he, in runner’s pose, is making a getaway. In his hand is clutched, not a sack of cash, but a bunch of pens. That’s right, pens. (more…)

The other day I had the chance to be interviewed on an Internet radio show designed to introduce youth to the various professions that have been ranked by the Jobs Rated Almanac as the Top 100 Careers for the next decade. “Chiropractor” ranked number 19.

“I really did something to my back — but I think it’s just a muscle.”
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard patients tell me this. Yes, the muscle might be spasmed and painful, but the truth is the problem is rarely just a muscle — no more than is it just a bone or just a nerve. It’s a bit more complicated. More often there are multiple factors at play.

While I’ll be the first to agree that the advent of Web 2.0 and its ensuing social media revolution is chock full of pitfalls and traps, it does have some definite advantages. One in particular is its ability to create strong communities of people united by a common interest that could never have come together otherwise, let alone meet. Such is the case with social networking platforms, such as Facebook, and the principally-grounded chiropractor. We chiropractors tend to be isolated islands, busy taking care of the people that seek us out as we proclaim an outlook on health that counters the vast sea that surrounds us. It’s easy to get beat down at times. And this is precisely how avenues such as Facebook can become a virtual life raft for practitioners like myself. This outlet has enabled me to connect with hundreds of like-mined chiropractors around the globe — allowing iron to sharpen iron, so to speak, even if it is through cyberspace.
The other day, I read a posting from California chiropractor Steve Tullius. Dr. Tullius has been on my internet radio program (SpinalColumnRadio.com) a number of times and has invested more than his fair share of blood, sweat, and tears into preserving the purity of our profession. (more…)

On a flight home, chiropractor Kevin Donka settled into his seat. Behind him was a mother with her baby.
As the flight took off, the baby — as many will — began to cry. The mother did everything in her power to quiet the little one… but to no avail. The child simply would not calm down. And then something happened that every parent fears while flying — the child’s cry catapulted to a full-tilt shrill. Again, the mother tried and tried but the child could not be comforted.
At about minute ten of the full-blown wail, Dr. Donka began to think to himself, “Maybe I should offer to help. Maybe there is something I can do.”

Vomit. Not quite your standard opening to a newspaper article, but it does have a way of catching your attention. Most of my patients are very familiar with this word. It perhaps is the most popular of the words that I scribble on my white board every week. “So what does vomiting have to do with chiropractic?” you ask. More than you might think…

Chiropractic is different.
Visit one of us, and I’m sure you’ll have no problem drawing this conclusion on your own. It’s not necessarily a bad thing that we’re different. After all, for many that consult our offices, that’s exactly what they are looking for — something different, something other than medicine.

Onions and chiropractic? A new culinary delight? Perhaps. But the reality is that when most people finally show up in a chiropractor’s office their spine resembles an onion. The symptom (usually pain) that eventually drives them to our offices is all too often an overt warning flag of a problem that has persisted for quite some time. Like the layers of an onion, neglected spines are virtually layered with a history of stress and injuries — making the chiropractic experience akin to that of an archeological dig. What surprises a lot of people, is that the neck or back pain they’re experiencing as an adult, could have stemmed from the time they fell off the changing table as an infant, the fender bender Mom got into when they were a toddler, or the fall they took off their bike as a youth. Or perhaps, they never had a fighting chance — perhaps their “onion” can be peeled back to an event we all share in common: birth.
