I stood at the clinical white sink and depressed the pedal with my right foot. Hot water streamed from the spigot and hit my hands. I began scrubbing. Three minutes to be exact — all the way up to the elbows. I was being watched. This is the protocol here at the hospital where my newborn is currently receiving care.
As I settled into a comfortable washing rhythm I began thinking about how this very procedure — washing hands — was once scoffed and ridiculed. And, yet, now it is completely accepted. It’s common sense. And in this case, required. Dr. Semmelweis would have been proud. (more…)

On a flight home, chiropractor Kevin Donka settled into his seat. Behind him was a mother with her baby.
As the flight took off, the baby — as many will — began to cry. The mother did everything in her power to quiet the little one… but to no avail. The child simply would not calm down. And then something happened that every parent fears while flying — the child’s cry catapulted to a full-tilt shrill. Again, the mother tried and tried but the child could not be comforted.
At about minute ten of the full-blown wail, Dr. Donka began to think to himself, “Maybe I should offer to help. Maybe there is something I can do.”

Onions and chiropractic? A new culinary delight? Perhaps. But the reality is that when most people finally show up in a chiropractor’s office their spine resembles an onion. The symptom (usually pain) that eventually drives them to our offices is all too often an overt warning flag of a problem that has persisted for quite some time. Like the layers of an onion, neglected spines are virtually layered with a history of stress and injuries — making the chiropractic experience akin to that of an archeological dig. What surprises a lot of people, is that the neck or back pain they’re experiencing as an adult, could have stemmed from the time they fell off the changing table as an infant, the fender bender Mom got into when they were a toddler, or the fall they took off their bike as a youth. Or perhaps, they never had a fighting chance — perhaps their “onion” can be peeled back to an event we all share in common: birth.

After practicing nearly fifteen years, I am still honored and humbled when asked to adjust a newborn. The other day I adjusted a three-day-old.

“My husband and I are having difficulty conceiving… can chiropractic help?”
This is a question that I hear in my office from time to time, and my answer, I’m happy to say, is that it’s very possible!

With a prevalence second only to that of the common cold, ear infections — more correctly known as “otitis media” in doctor jargon — may just seem like a part of growing up. Doctors estimate that children will have at least one by the time they turn six. Unfortunately, for many the occurrences are quite a bit higher — some as many as 12 in any given year. Perhaps this is why one doctor referred to otitis media as “an occupational hazard of childhood.” Truly though, the “hazard” lies in the common course of the “hamster wheel” medical treatments the majority will face. Aside from “well check ups,” otitis media is the number one reason a child will visit a pediatrician.

Torticollis. While it might sound like a strange Italian dish, it’s not. Imagine waking up one morning with your ear pressed to your shoulder as if cradling a telephone receiver. The only problem is, there is no telephone to be found — only an unrelenting, painful neck spasm with absolutely no ability to bring your head back to any semblance of socially accepted posture. Most would agree, it’s a pretty disturbing situation to find yourself in. Thankfully, in most cases, the “fix” for torticollis can be as simple as a visit to your local chiropractor. (more…)

For many of us, going “number 2” is just something we fit into our day. Not much thought is given to it. Sure, most of us have experienced an occasional, short-term bout of constipation, perhaps due to a shift in diet, not drinking enough water, or emotional stress. But unfortunately, the $800 million spent each year in this country for laxatives tells us that for some, constipation is hardly “an occasional bout” — it’s a way of life.
Consider the story of an 8-year-old boy who, since the day he was born, would only experience a bowel movement once every 7 to 10 days — sometimes almost 2 weeks would go by. And when he would finally “go,” it was a 1 to 2 hour experience in the bathroom that almost always ended up with mom or dad fetching the plunger. (more…)
