Twinkies are now back on supermarket shelves, and their new owner (who also owns Pabst Blue Ribbon beer) is banking that you’ll come flocking back to stock up on the iconic snack food. And while I’m sure the new company will reap a return on their investment, my vantage point as a chiropractor is not convinced they’ll see the return they’re hoping for.
Lately we’ve been witnessing a slow, groundswell “shift” in how our country views —and does — health, and the story of the Twinkie illustrates the point beautifully. (more…)
Restoration of Normal Cylces

While I’ll be the first to agree that the advent of Web 2.0 and its ensuing social media revolution is chock full of pitfalls and traps, it does have some definite advantages. One in particular is its ability to create strong communities of people united by a common interest that could never have come together otherwise, let alone meet. Such is the case with social networking platforms, such as Facebook, and the principally-grounded chiropractor. We chiropractors tend to be isolated islands, busy taking care of the people that seek us out as we proclaim an outlook on health that counters the vast sea that surrounds us. It’s easy to get beat down at times. And this is precisely how avenues such as Facebook can become a virtual life raft for practitioners like myself. This outlet has enabled me to connect with hundreds of like-mined chiropractors around the globe — allowing iron to sharpen iron, so to speak, even if it is through cyberspace.
The other day, I read a posting from California chiropractor Steve Tullius. Dr. Tullius has been on my internet radio program (SpinalColumnRadio.com) a number of times and has invested more than his fair share of blood, sweat, and tears into preserving the purity of our profession. (more…)
Your Healthcare has been Doctored

Recently a film producer compared the chiropractic profession to a “beaten wife.” To paraphrase, he said, “During the course of the making of my film, I was astounded by how large groups of chiropractors contacted me saying, ‘Please don’t make them mad, Jeff.’”
The film producer I’m talking about is Jeff Hays. His movie is entitled “Doctored.” And the “them” he was referring to is Political Medicine.
“It’s time for chiropractors to stand up and make their own voices heard,” he said in response to a question regarding why the successes of chiropractic have been suppressed and not gotten out to the public. (more…)
Happy Birthday, Chiropractic!

Mark your calendars! Because on September 18th, chiropractic turns 108 [115 by today’s date in 2010]. It was on this day back in 1895, from his office on the second floor of the Ryan Block building in Davenport, Iowa, that D.D. Palmer delivered his first adjustment — an adjustment that not only changed the life of his patient, but the lives of millions that would follow the birth of this new profession of chiropractic.
So, just what did the first chiropractic patient complain of? Well, it may surprise you, but it wasn’t back pain, neck pain, or even headaches. (more…)
Navigating the Chiropractic Technique Jungle

Diversified, Gonstead, Cox Flexion Distraction, Activator, Thompson, Sacro Occipital Technique, NIMMO Receptor Tonus, Applied Kinesiology, Logan Basic, Cranial, Pierce-Stillwagon, Pettibon, Directional Non-Force, Toftness, Chiropractic Spinal Biophysics, Toggle Recoil, Neuro Emotional Technique — the list goes on, and on, and on, easily surpassing the 100 mark. To the average chiropractic patient, or non-patient for that matter, these names probably seem like some sort of cryptic chiropractic jargon. But to the chiropractor, these names parallel a walk down the tool aisle at Sears — these names represent chiropractic adjustive techniques.
From Broadcasting to Podcasting — Chiropractic Delivers its Message

On January 1st, 2010, the SpinalColumnRadio.com “podcast” debuts with yours truly on the Internet “air” talking about the very topics I write about. And while the idea of a chiropractic podcast is relatively new, a chiropractic broadcast is not.
Go to Jail for Chiropractic!

I got a call a few months ago at the office from an official-sounding woman proclaiming that she had a warrant for my arrest! I was to be thrown in jail! Visions of being dragged down to our overcrowded hoosegow filled my head. A moment of fear set in. Who would treat my patients? Who would take care of my family?
Before I could figure out how I’d post bail, the woman’s voice softened and I quickly learned that the “arrest” was actually part of a creative fund raising effort to help fight muscular dystrophy. Apparently I had been charged with “having a big heart.” What a relief!
As we embark upon the Thanksgiving Holiday Season, I can honestly say that I am thankful that I wasn’t actually arrested. More importantly, however, I am thankful for my chiropractic predecessors who were.
